Are natural remedies for flea/tick/heartworm prevention safe to use on my pet?

Not necessarily. Just because a product has “natural” on its label doesn’t mean it is safe. Consult with your veterinarian before using any over-the-counter preventives on your pet.

Many over the counter (OTC) products are not subject to evaluation or quality control inspections. The FDA does not regulate these products the same way as with other medications. We don’t recommend using products without the recommendation of a veterinarian. Our doctors are specifically trained to help you find the right product for your pet’s health needs and lifestyle.

Although natural remedies may offer some protection or repellency against parasites, they are not nearly as effective as prescription products. And in many cases, these products may not be as safe as you think. Natural products may kill parasites, but some, such as garlic and tea tree oils, can also cause harm to your dog or cat if they are used in excess or inappropriately. In addition, natural remedies often need to be applied more frequently than once a month, making them less convenient as well.
